Psychiatry’s Legitimacy Crisis

Los Angeles Review of Books – Psychiatry’s Legitimacy Crisis.

I remember having the same sinking feeling of pointlessness about the field of psychiatry after reading Physical Control of the Mind by Jose Delgado back in college.  I had invested so much time and energy becoming familiar with the psychoanalytic approach, seeing it as a career path, and then, POOF!

I talked about this with Jack Downing in early ’73 at his place on the coast and he reminded me of Huxley’s predictions in Brave New World Revisited.  I also had a shorter version of the same conversation with Al Frances in Durham, over lunch in ’93.  Even then, Al was a bit touchy about DSMIV.
